Until recently, Nazism in Russian media has been reserved for Ukraine. This is now changing. Russian propaganda is increasingly focused on breaking the unity of the EU, where it has also “discovered” Nazism.
This time, it surfaced during an exchange between Radosław Sikorski and Elon Musk. After the European Commission imposed a €120 million fine on Musk’s platform X for violating the Digital Services Act, Musk strongly criticised the European Union, suggesting, among other things, that it should cease to exist. “The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people.” , Musk wrote.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski responded to these remarks: “Go to Mars. There is no censorship of Nazi salutes there,” he replied, referring to a gesture resembling a Roman salute that the billionaire made twice at the Capital One Arena in Washington during an event accompanying the inauguration of Donald Trump’s presidency.
Responding to Musk’s statement — “The EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people”— Sikorski added: “If anyone still had any doubts about who all this anti-EU talk about sovereignty serves. Those who want to profit from sowing hatred and those who want to conquer Europe.”
Musk also reposted a message comparing the European Union to the Fourth Reich and depicting the EU flag combined with the flag of Nazi Germany. He commented on it with the words: “Basically, yes.” In another post, he argued that the EU should be abolished. In yet another, he claimed that Brussels had imposed the fine not on X, but on him personally.
The latter claim was enthusiastically received by Vladimir Putin’s representative, Kirill Dmitriev. “Well said,” he commented.
Journalist and publicist Rafael Orduchanian repeated this narrative on news.ru. “A European Reich is being created, which can exist only at the expense of other nations. Most European countries are currently led by people who (…) can only function within the framework of Nazism,” he lied. And he consistently continues this line of argument, further claiming that, in order to retain power, European leaders are frightening their own societies with a “mythical Russian threat”.
“Exactly the same thing happened in the 1930s. After all, not only Germany, but also Spain, Portugal, parts of France, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria
and Romania became Nazi in essence. Now only the formal aspect has changed. Now, instead of antisemitism, Russophobia has been chosen,” Orduchanian claimed.
“Many political forces, as well as the nations of European countries themselves, have already realised that they have lost their national identity. In order to fix this, they must stop feeding supranational bodies that are trying to drag them into war and return to national structures,” the Russian journalist concluded.
